Slow songs for a fast world

Summer - Winter in Shanghai 2011 inspired the birth of ‘Slow songs for a fast world’. These songs are a direct response to this amazing place that I call home The streets, the people, the language barriers, the frustration, the distance from the familiar, the connections and the so often strangely hilarious experiences all Inform these songs.

Shanghai is a city in China located at the heart of the Yangtze River Delta. It is a modern city by Chinese standards. As a result of the Opium War, China was forced to open some ports to foreign countries. Shanghai was one of these ports. It was highly prosperous as foreigners from Europe, America, and Japan came to Shanghai in search of success. This was during the 1920s that Shanghai reached a sort of peak. Many foreigners lived in the city and it was one of the most diverse cities in the world during that time. Then WW2 happened and the Revolution in China and foreigners were driven out of China. During the cultural revolution many social and political changes took place. When China reopened her doors in the late 1970s, they were reopened to a different country. One that had suffered greatly as a result of the years of turmoil. Gradually, foriegners and foreign businesses have returned to Shanghai. About 15 years ago Shanghai government officials decided to develop the land on the east side of the Huangpu River. Thus, the city is now divided into two sections. Pudong (the new part) and Pu Xi. Along the Huang PU river which divides the city you can see the past and the future. Shanghai is currently under construction. New buildings seem to appear over night. it is a very exciting place to be.

Far from Beijing

Dark dark night everyone’s asleep upstairs
The moon was full before you came along but now its disappeared

Chinese Dream

I wont beg you to come around
Looking out the windows at the bare trees could be anywhere in the world but this is my Chinese dream even though its grey its very beautiful in the French concession on Anfu Lu
These days are long since you’ve been gone and this unsteady ground that I walk on I’ve never been on
I don’t know if I can or if I want to my will carries me to the good in you everything you gave means so much
When the light of day shines on everything has been lost
No promises to keep unsure of what’s to come everywhere I turn there’s a new face looking out I’m looking out for you

Long Road to Happiness

Behind the door a tired fly caught in a web can’t move the door swings open the web breaks the fly flies away you come back
Memory pulls a trigger to the well inside you look up ahead there’s no signs to guide you

Winding Road

The mist rolls over these bright green hills
The road winds it way past those little black cows miss you now like I missed

Down this little lane

came into town blasting trumpets so loud you wore striped suits to stop traffic without rules there was no way a warning would have been listened to from where we came we didn’t want to go back to but today
