Scratching the surface @ 195 Anfu Lu Shanghai

‘Scratching the Surface’ Frottage of Shanghai's underbelly          Crouched down on the streets of Shanghai, I place beautiful handmade paper from Guanxi over the drain covers.          Rubbing charcoal on paper I reveal patterns, textures and information about secrets below the surface of the street. I trace where I have been, mapping the places that I love and scratch the surface of a China that continues to captivate and hold my gaze with awe and inspiration.

Silence is at the heart of all things. All things begin and end in silence.

The omittance of unnecessary language and the reduction to the essential can create a powerful experience; bringing the viewer into contact with the divine, the ultimate reality and one’s own true self.

But one acknowledges that the language of silence inherently poses a dilemma of expressing the essence of what cannot be represented.

In silence know thy truth.
