Kate ‘bitsy’ Stead
(oil on canvas 51cm x 41cm, 2020)
I have known Kate for almost 25years. Our friendship has always circled a love of art. Kate is also painter and we share a working studio in Bangalow, a town in NSW northern rivers region.
At the ‘Itsy bitsy art space”; Kate is bitsy and I am itsy.
In painting Kate; I wanted to capture her as she appears to me, sitting across the studio at her table in her Remo stripy top, big specs and eyes shining back from a face that is full of life and love.
I am so grateful to have Kate in my life and share a friendship steeped in art, conversation and filled with the spirit of collaboration.

‘Scratching the Surface’
Frottage of Shanghai's underbelly
Crouched down on the streets of Shanghai,
I place beautiful handmade paper from Guanxi over the drain covers.
Rubbing charcoal on paper I reveal patterns, textures and information about secrets below the surface of the street.
I trace where I have been, mapping the places that I love and scratch the surface of a China that continues to captivate and hold my gaze with awe and inspiration.
SUBURBAN EMBRYO

Silence is at the heart of all things. All things begin and end in silence.
The omittance of unnecessary language and the reduction to the essential can create a powerful experience; bringing the viewer into contact with the divine, the ultimate reality and one’s own true self.
But one acknowledges that the language of silence inherently poses a dilemma of expressing the essence of what cannot be represented.
In silence know thy truth.
